SEO Web Content Writing

The purpose of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) web content writing is to rank your pages in the organic search results from search engines like Google, Bing, Baidu, Yahoo, etc. Ideally…on the first page of every search result, lol! Well! Here is what you basically require in order to attempt this intimidating feat:

  • High-quality content writing
  • Backlinks
  • Keywords (with customer persona fully understood)
  • Page load speed (especially on mobile devices)

Articles, Posts & Blogs

The differences between articles, posts and blogs are such that each needs its own consideration when creating content.

Articles: Formal pieces of writing intended to be informational with evidence-backed facts. Usually in the third person narrative. Articles are well-researched, have citations and follow a structured written logic. You present your premises upon which you will make your conclusion. Articles vary from 1,500 to over 5,000 words in length.

Posts: Writing that is usually voiced in the first person narrative. The writing style is casual and conversational. However, posts have become blurred with the newer concept of ‘blog post.’ People tend to now see posts (blog posts) as casually written pieces increasingly supported by addendum research and citations. Basically, I see a post (blog post) as an article written in an informal way. Posts vary from 2,100 to 2,400 words in length.

Blogs: Blogs are typically written in an informal style and usually follow a publishing timetable. Their purpose is to be personable, informative and perhaps even opined. Blogs are typically written in the first person narrative. They are generally 300 words or more but never over 2,000 words.

Then, of course, there is the subject matter that goes into these articles, posts (blog posts) and blogs! Myself…because I enjoy research.., I have no problem writing about anything…except law, medicine and love!

Social Media

Social Media Definition: Social media are interactive technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, interests, and other forms of expression through virtual communities and networks. [Quoted from Wikipedia]

Do you know the 4 main social media platforms for businesses? Well, I do! And, here they are:

  • Twitter (~320,000,000 users)
  • Facebook (~2,500,000,000 users)
  • LinkedIn (~260,000,000 users)
  • Instagram (~1,000,000,000 users)

A lot of potential! But, again…does your customer persona fit into all these social media platforms? Perhaps only 2! The bottom line is: “every business today needs to be active on a social media platform (or platforms) that snuggly fit their customer persona and, in return, gives them a nice digital presence & a nice ROI.”

Press Releases

“Hot news flash folks!”

The purpose of press releases is to get them published by as many journalists as possible. Publications could be on a website, via printed material, or even on the radio.

Styling for press releases generally follows the Associated Press (AP) style guide.

What is the structure of a press release?

Press Release Structure

1) Logo (top of press release)
2) Time for publication: either “For Immediate Release” or “Embargoed for Release Until – given date
3) Capitalized headline
4) Sub-headline (optional)
5) Dateline format: CITY, State/Province, Month, Day, Year –
6) Body content: at least 3 paragraphs long. The first paragraphs should contain the 5Ws. Basically a story brief within a paragraph. The remaining paragraphs should fill out the story with an added quote or two
7) About (boilerplate text) paragraph: basically a promotional pitch for your business containing a website address, info on business, and any other relevant information
8) Contact information
9) End your press release with a series of 3 pound symbols (# # #)
